Dining With The Sultan: The Fine Art of Feasting

September 22nd, 2024
– January 5th, 2025
Detroit Institute of the Arts, Michigan – USA
The exhibition “The Art of Dining” brought together around 230 works from the Middle East, Egypt, Central and South Asia, and other regions. It examined how dining practices have been represented and celebrated across centuries, from artistic depictions of gatherings to finely crafted vessels and manuscripts connected with culinary traditions. The display highlighted the cultural and social importance of preparing, serving, and sharing meals, engaging visitors through objects that reflected both daily customs and ceremonial occasions. Originally organised by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), the exhibition included loans from 30 public and private collections in the United States, Europe, and the Middle East, as well as 16 works from the DIA’s collection. The al-Sabah Collection (Dar al-Athar al-Islamiyyah) also participated, contributing selected objects to this international project.
